Note: Before I begin my argument, let it be heard that I am not against women’s rights, nor do I support discrimination based on gender in any way. Furthermore, I am not processing these social issues through a religious, closed-minded, or anti-progressive mentality. I process these complex problems through a logic based mentality, without exception. Thank you.

Quintessentially, Feminism is the belief and stance that fights for a woman’s equal rights comparable to those given to men. Many saying Feminism is a belief held by anyone who supports equality among gender. This vastly overgeneralized application saturates Feminism greatly, but I digress. When Feminism is brought up in conversation, it is usually discussed apologetically, and rarely ever is declared wrong, in my personal experience. For an individual to denounce Feminism is considered to be egregious and condemnable. An anti-feminist is quite often labeled a misogynist. An anti-progressive. A bigot. I am not an anti-feminist, merely a Humanist.

Feminism, in it’s very name, is the promotion of women’s rights, due to current discriminatory treatment. This kind of treatment is absolutely immoral, and must be eschewed to facilitate social progress. But this unthoughtful treatment is absolutely not exclusive to women.

Domestic violence and abuse, an extremely prevalent issue among today’s media outlets. In cases of marital abuse, statistics show a roughly equal amount of abuse between the genders. But it is patently clear that domestic abuse towards females is considered disgraceful and unforgivable, while the same sort of abuse toward males is just not as immoral and condemnable. A clear double standard, and countless more. To name a few:

-Child Custody cases, rarely do fathers receive full custody and joint custody is still challenging to obtain.

-Women are not required to sign up for selective service at age 18.

-Male Circumcision is legal and widely accepted, while female circumcision is illegal and considered mutilation.

-Women are often chosen over men to work jobs involving contact with children, in fear of pedophilia.

-The unemployment rate for men is nearly triple the rate of women’s unemployment.

-Women are able to retire at age 60, while men cannot retire until age 65.

-Men are often slapped, kicked, kneed in the testicles, or punched on national television programs and receive laughter. While, broadcasted male attacks on women are disgusting acts.

-Countless cases of mothers murdering their children and receiving mild sentencing, while no mercy is shown to men of the same crime.

Double standards and discrimination are patently visible for both genders, and ending this behavior will not be accomplished by fighting for the rights of one gender. Both genders endure this bigotry, both genders are the victims. The Feminist movement promotes women’s rights and fights the perceived patriarchy, but the Masculism movement doesn’t exist.

Double standards and discrimination are problems faced by all humanity. To fascilitate social progress, acheive lasting equality, and accomplish the Feminists ideals, both genders must fight for equality. Humanity must fight for equality.

Humanism. Men and women, united, fighting for gender equality.
